Passport & Visa — Entry Requirements for Mongolia

2026-01-04

Planning your trip to Mongolia is exciting — and understanding the passport and visa requirements will help ensure a smooth arrival and stay. Below is the latest practical guide to help you prepare with confidence.

🛂 Passport Requirements

To enter Mongolia, all visitors must have a valid passport that:

  • Is valid for at least six months beyond your planned date of entry
  • Has at least one (or two) blank pages for entry and exit stamps
  • Children and minors must each have their own passport (they cannot be included on a parent’s passport)

Airlines and immigration officials commonly check this before departure, so make sure your passport meets these requirements early.

✈️ Visa Requirements — What You Need to Know

Visa Not Required (Visa‑Free Travel)

Many travelers from countries including the United States, Canada, most EU countries, the UK, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and others can enter Mongolia without a visa for tourism stays of up to 90 days (within any 180‑day period).

Additionally, Mongolia has temporarily extended visa‑free access for citizens of several European countries, Australia, and New Zealand for stays up to 30 days through 2026 as part of tourism promotion efforts.

📌 Always check official government sources before you travel — visa policies can change.

🛃 When You Do Need a Visa

If your nationality is not on the visa‑free list, or if you plan to:

  • Stay longer than the visa‑free period
  • Work, study, or stay long‑term
  • Enter for purposes other than tourism

…you will need to obtain a Mongolian visa in advance from a Mongolian Embassy or Consulate, or—if eligible—apply for an e‑Visa online.

💻 E‑Visa — Fast & Easy Online Option

Mongolia offers an e‑Visa system that allows eligible travelers to apply online without visiting a consulate:

  • Available to citizens of many countries for tourism, cultural/sports events, or transit
  • Applied for at https://www.evisa.mn/
  • You receive your e‑Visa electronically (print or save a copy) and present it on arrival
  • Processing is usually completed within 48–72 hours

🧳 Visa on Arrival & Special Cases

Mongolia does not routinely offer visas on arrival for all tourists. In some cases — such as if you have a pre‑approved invitation or official travel arrangements — border authorities may issue a visa at the airport or land crossing, but this usually requires prior coordination.

🔄 Registration After Arrival

If you enter visa‑free or with a short‑term visa, many travellers must register with the Mongolian Immigration Agency (either online or within 48–72 hours of arrival). Failure to register can lead to fines upon departure.

Your hotel or tour operator often handles registration on your behalf — so ask in advance!

💡 Tips for a Smooth Entry

  • Always check the latest requirements with your local Mongolian Embassy or official government site before you book.
  • Ensure your passport has enough validity and blank pages. Make sure that your passport is valid for at least 6 or more months from the date of arrival!
  • Keep copies of your visa or e‑Visa confirmation handy — both printed and digital.
  • If you plan to stay longer, you may be able to extend your stay through the Immigration Agency in Ulaanbaatar.
